Exhibits
A visit to the Sandy Historical Society Museum is like stepping back in time.
Carefully curated exhibits conjure a history and peoples who endured hardship and travail to help bring civilization to our piece of Oregon Territory. Two floors of museum space are devoted to the geography, the pioneers and settlers and their role in the settling of the West. Preview this small sampling of the historical treasures we've helped preserve over the years, then come explore it all in person!
The main exhibit hall showcases the role of geography in influencing the emigrants to stay in this area rather than push towards the Columbia River. The exhibit hall also includes a diorama, video, logging equipment and an excellent collection of photographs of the logging industry, which was the heart of the Sandy economy.
The displays in the top floor gallery (accessible by elevator or stairs) are meant to be a look back in time. One of the many exhibits is “Sandy Women Leaders” which showcases Sandy’s past and current women leaders in city hall. Currently, Sandy has a majority women council, first time in its history, and its fourth woman mayor. Within the exhibit is the history of Sandy’s previous woman mayor, dating back to 1919. “Our Town, Sandy” exhibit home is upstairs as well, holding artifacts from numerous local businesses.
Written history is available on the top floor as well in Jonsurd’s Library which includes Sandy Post archives. Beside it contains Sandy High School history, including class list, pictures of the old and new building, MeeMa yearbooks and more. All are free and open for the public to view.
Take a break as well in the museum to enjoy the book corner and build a Lego set showing what YOU love about Sandy.
There is always more to be discovered at the Sandy Historical Society Museum.
